Character Creation House Rules
You may or may not be very familiar with the rules for character creation in 4e D&D.
The printed rules say:
- When rolling dice for ability scores, roll 4d6 and add up the top 3 results. Do this 6 times and assign the resulting numbers in any order as your ability scores.
- When choosing equipment, start with 100gp and “buy” whatever mundane items you like, using the 100gp and keeping what gold you have left afterward.
As a DM, to reduce PC mortality, I’ve decided to edit the rules for character creation.
- When rolling dice for ability scores, roll 4d6, reroll any 1s, and add up the top 3 results. If you get any 18s, make that a 19 instead. Do this 36 times, making a chart 6 × 6. Choose whichever horizontal or vertical row you like, and assign the numbers in any order as your ability scores.
- When choosing equipment, first choose one magic item of level 1, and one magic item of your level or lower. Then start with 100gp and “buy” whatever mundane equipment you like and keep the remaining gold for yourself.
